Welcome to the May issue of 2DArtist magazine! In this issue we continue inspiring you with excellent tutorial series and amazing you with stunning artwork. From manga characters to creating amazing animations, using paintings and live-action footage, there’s something for everyone!

There are so many great tutorials in this month’s magazine that it’s hard to know where to begin. I’ll start with the awesome cover image by Patipat Asavasena, who’s also the artist guiding us through our new manga series. In the second chapter, with help from Joan of Arc, he’ll be showing us the techniques character artists use to achieve the manga style.

In April’s magazine Jama Jurabaev explained how he developed his storyboards and concepts for the high quality matte painting backdrops he used for his Dreamscape video. This time around he gets to the exciting part, where he shares practical tips and shows us how he filmed the live footage, which he will composite into his amazing images in next month’s issue!

We also continue our droid series with Ignacio Bazan Lazcano creating probably my favorite type of droid, the bartender droid! He talks us through his concept and initial ideas, developing his chosen design, producing technical drawings and even shows us how he placed his droid into a supporting environment.

Moving on to our next series, Mythological Creatures, we are in the capable hands of Simon Dominic Brewer and Christopher Peters this month, as they tackle the mysterious Jiang Shi, otherwise known as a Chinese “hopping” vampire/zombie. We knew that this would be an interesting illustration as this creature leaps around, killing living things and sucking the life force out of them! Take a closer look to find out how each of our artists interpret the same brief and come up with their own unique versions of this charming creature, Simon in Painter and Christopher in Photoshop.

If that’s not enough for you, we also feature a Making Of by the mystical Jenny Healy, an interview with senior matte painter Luca Gabriele Rossetti and a sketchbook that gives an insight into the creative mind of concept artist, George Guo. And, of course, our brilliant gallery featuring work by Oleg Leshiy Shekhovtsov, Saeed Ramezani, Chaichan Artwichai and many more talented artists.

Welcome to the April issue of 2DArtist magazine! You might have thought we would have prepared an issue full of Easter bunnies, little chicks and all the other cheesy things that come out this time of year. I’m sure you are pleased to hear that we have, in fact, resisted this urge and instead given you your monthly fix of droids, mythological creatures and manga characters!

On the subject of manga characters we will get the ball rolling this month by mentioning our cool new series about painting historical characters in this iconic style. We will be in the more than capable hands of Thailand-based artist Patipat Asavasena throughout this series, who will be showing us exactly what it is that makes a character look manga in style, and how to use these features and unique characteristics to create our own cool illustrations. As you will be able to tell from the cover image, the quality of the art from this series is really great, and if you like this image you will love the rest of the series.

I hope you all enjoyed watching Jama Jurabaev’s amazing Dreamscape video last month. In this issue he continues to explain he developed his storyboard and concepts to create high quality matte paintings to use as the backdrop for his imaginary planet. This series is new ground for our magazine and is proving to be really interesting. Stay tuned for next month’s issue where Jama will be showing us how he filmed the live footage that he composited into his amazing images.

Here at 2DArtist we pride ourselves on our ability to bring your great tutorials month after month, but every now and then I read a tutorial that’s a must-read for anyone interested in working in the concept art industry. That is the case with this month’s droids tutorial by Jeremy Love. Jeremy talks us through creating a droid concept for a game from the very first phase of creating and refining thumbnail sketches, through to developing your chosen design and creating technical drawings for a 3D artist. He leaves no stone unturned and gives us priceless advice every step of the way, including information about the amount of time it should take to develop a project like this. I think you are going to love this one.

This month’s mythological creature is the creepy mamalarang. The mamalarang is a witch who uses bugs to torture and cast spells on her unsuspecting prey, and in this issue Simon Dominic Brewer and Andrei Pervukhin show us how they interpreted this brief to create their own gruesome paintings.

I know that you are going to love all of the amazing tutorials in this excellent issue. The influx of inspiration doesn’t end there though; there is also a stunning gallery featuring work from Xavier Etchepare, Bruno Hamzagic, Ivan Kashubo and many more talented artists, an interview with the jaw-dropping digital artist Herve Groussin, and a sketchbook featuring the work of Herman Ng.

Hello and welcome to the March issue of 2DArtist. Here in the UK, we are beginning to see the first signs of spring! The sun is starting to peep through the clouds and the once brown and dreary looking trees are turning green again and coming to life. If this can’t put a smile on your face I’m sure our new issue of 2DArtist will do the trick!

There are so many great tutorials in this month’s magazine that it is hard to know where to start the editorial, but we will begin by turning our attention to the stunning cover image by Carlos Cabrera. I hope that you are enjoying watching how two artists tackle the same brief. It is fascinating to see how some features are similar and other are totally different, and in this magazine we see more of the different than the similar. Simon Dominic and Carlos Cabrera look at the creepy creature called a hidebehind in this issue and cover design, compositional and painting techniques as they talk us through the creation of their brilliant images.

On the subject of creepy, we say goodbye to Blaz Porenta’s excellent Illustrating Fairy Tales series with a chapter covering how he brought the story of Hansel and Gretel to life. We’re really grateful for all of the hard work Blaz has put into creating his amazing images and look forward to working with him again in the future. Stay tuned for our brand new series, coming in April, where we look at creating Manga version of classic historic leaders, including the great Genghis Khan and Egyptian queen, Cleopatra.

In last month’s issue we kicked off our new Droids series, and in this issue we continue by looking at how to design and paint a Recon Droid. Alexander Iglesias is back again and talks us through his love of droids and mechs, as well as demonstrating his approach to dealing with this amazing subject matter.

Our new series this month is a little different to what you might be used to in our magazine. Jama Jurabaev is a regular contributor to 2DArtist, but in his four part series he will be demonstrating something new by showing us how to create amazing animations using paintings, live-action footage and compositing techniques. I strongly recommend that you take a look at the video in his tutorial to see the amazing results you can achieve using this technique.

Also in this issue we feature another Making Of by the amazingly talented Markus Lovadina, an interview with the excellent artist Clint Cearley and a sketchbook that gives us an insight into the creative mind of Tyson Murphy. As if this wasn’t enough, we’ve also got a top-notch gallery featuring work by Levente Petterfy, Andrei Pervukhin, Francesco Corvino and many more talented artists.

Hello and a very happy new year! I hope that you all enjoyed a festive break and had a memorable new year. 2DArtist are happy to kick the year off with some amazing tutorials and a really exciting new tutorial series.

We will start this month by talking about the stunning image on the cover. I am sure you have been enjoying the excellent Illustrating Fairy Tales series. Up till now we have been in the very capable hands of Simon Dominic Brewer, but in this month’s magazine we hand proceedings over to Blaz Porenta. In this issue Blaz talks us through how he created his stunning image of Little Red Riding Hood and describes how important it is to set your mood and composition at the start of the process when trying to portray a story in your image. I can give you some insider knowledge and let you know that this series is well worth keeping an eye on.

David Smit and Nadia Karroue continue to tell us about how they have developed and expanded their fantastic Hippie Pippie Pocalypse universe in this month’s issue, and in particular they talk us through how they develop their characters and how to turn an idea into a story.

We wrap up our short series on using Google Sketch Up to create vehicle illustrations this month, and bring things to a close with a real bang. One of 2DArtists favorite artists Carlos Cabrera is back in this issue and shows us how create a cool illustration of a futuristic submarine. Carlos is a real pro when it comes to painting over a 3D base, so this tutorial is a must for anyone interested in the technique.

Now it’s time to tell you about our exciting new series! Mythology has inspired all types of art for years, and we are more than familiar with images of Medusa and The Minotaur, so in this series we will be exploring the lesser know creatures of mythology in an interesting and unique way. We will be giving a short brief to two (yes two) artists who will be told to interpret and create an illustration from it without researching the subject further. At the end of the tutorials we will be able to compare images to see how the same brief can be interpreted by different artists. Getting the ball rolling this month are two UK based artists who show us how they thing a Charybdis would look. The two artists will use different software, so in this issue Simon Dominic Brewer will be showing us how he created his image in Painter and Matt Dixon in Photoshop.

As you can tell this is a great issue and we haven’t even talked about the amazing interview with one of my favorite artists Tuomas Korpi. We also have a great Making of by the very talented Markus Lovadina and some stunning gallery images by Serge Birault, Simon Weaner, Andreas Rocha and many more talented artists. Hello and welcome to the August issue of 2DArtist. In the spirit of the 2012 Olympic Games, which is currently in full swing, we have put together some winning tutorials that will help you develop your own skills!

Let’s start things off by taking a look at the fantastic image that adorns the cover of this month’s issue, which was created by the talented Patipat Asavasena for the final chapter in our manga series. To wrap things up Patipat demonstrates the workflow and painting techniques he used to create his manga interpretation of the Native American warrior, Geronimo.

We have also reached the final installment of the brilliant building droid series. This series has supplied a myriad of invaluable advice and knowledge so far, and this month is no exception as Carlos Cabrera rounds things off with his cool pleasure droid design. Sit back, relax and take a look!

In this course we will use the Viewport Canvas to interactively texture a football helmet in 3ds Max. Creating texture maps in the traditional way can often involve a lot of back and forth between different applications. In working this way, immediate feedback is hard to come by and the workflow can suffer as a result. In this course we'll use the Viewport Canvas to get immediate feedback while painting textures directly onto our models in 3ds Max. We'll cover setting up the Viewport Canvas on our example model, a football helmet. We'll explore the painting functionality, go over cloning details, and learn how to blend modes to modify our painted strokes.
